MMOtalk

So... MMORPGs. I've played a few...
Ultima Online
Everquest
Ragnarok Online
EVE Online
Anarchy Online
World of WarCraft
Puzzle Pirates

Yes. Even Puzzle Pirates. It's something I occassionally do in those 7-9 seconds between arrivals of completely original and awesome thoughts that I have.

But, it has illustrated an important facet of my game play(ing?):
I like being the best.

Or that is, in the case of MMOs, the best without selling my soul to the game. World of WarCraft was the most obvious (after the fact [I'm actually still paying for it..]) flavor of this. Without playing 80 hours a week, I managed to attain close to the very top end of stuff. Admittedly, the expansion ruined this for me, because in order to be top end, it REQUIRES selling your soul and you make VERY slow progress without playing at least 5-6 hours a day.

Even back in the old days of counter-strike. I was good. VERY good. The only people who would beat me on any sorta consistant basis, were those who PRACTICED (as in, they did it, everyday, as a job) the dumb game.

PP is nice because it rewards ability rather than time invested. But I don't think I'll play it that long. I find it VERY hard to really get interested in the mechanics of such things as navigation, the economy, or much beyond the parlor games. Thus, I'll never be able to be very important at all in the game.

Meh. It is still something to do between the arrival of incisive and original thoughts.

Wait, so which one was the one w/ the spaceships and the economy and the espionage and intrigue and all that?

EVE

Apparantly it's become EVEN WORSE. (I have some real life friends who play... a lot.)

They released an expansion pack. Apparantly, a new player would take approximately SIX YEARS of play to achieve "maxed" skills...
And around 15 months to get up to "decent combat skills".

It takes 9 months to get crafting skills up.

The game is massive. You CANNOT catch up.
